Election Law Journal

Government Agencies

Federal Elections Commission (FEC)
An independent regulatory agency. Duties: to disclose campaign finance information, to enforce the provisions of the law such as the limits and prohibitions on contributions, and to oversee the public funding of Presidential elections.
U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Voting Section
One of 11 sections in the Civil Rights Division, enforcing The Voting Rights Act of 1965, The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act of 1986 (UOCAVA), The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (Motor Voter), and The Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA).
U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC)
An independent, bipartisan commission established by the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA). Duties: develop guidance to meet HAVA requirements, adopt voluntary voting system guidelines, and serve as a national clearinghouse of information on election administration.
Federal Judicial Center (FJC)
The Federal Judicial Center is the research and education agency of the federal judicial system. They have assembled a collection of case studies on emergency election litigation in federal courts. Because of the time constraints in emergency cases, the case records are often not easily available from other sources.

Electoral Studies "is an international journal covering all aspects of voting, the central act in the democratic process."

Organizations

Brennan Center for Justice (NYU)
A non-partisan public policy and law institute focused on democracy and justice issues, including voting rights & elections and campaign finance reform.
The Campaign Finance Institute
The leading think tank on campaign finance policy, providing objective analyses and data on fundraising by candidates and political parties, studies on the ways interested groups spend money, and recommendations on effective disclosure.
Center for Competitive Politics
An organization dedicated to protecting First Amendment political rights, opposing efforts to limit campaign contributions. Useful for anti-campaign finance reform information.
Initiative & Referendum Institute (USC)
Reports on ballot initiatives and referendum elections in all fifty states, dating as far back as 1904.
Justice at Stake
A nonpartisan campaign working to keep state and federal courts fair and impartial. Useful for the area of judicial elections.
National Conference of State Legislatures
A bipartisan organization providing research, technical assistance, and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on pressing state issues. Topics include Elections & Campaigns and Redistricting.
ElectionLine.org
A grant-funded, non-advocacy information clearinghouse and e-newsletter providing up-to-the-minute news and analysis on election reform.
